SKOPOS gets involved
As part of a volunteer day, employees of SKOPOS are socially committed. The contact with OASIS, a charitable organization that cares mainly about the concerns of the homeless, (Benedict Labre eV) has been provided by the Cologne volunteer agency.
The first meeting between SKOPOS staff and people in precarious living situations took place at OASIS on 18th April 2009. A relaxed atmosphere developed quickly among the participants. SKOPOS made sure that on this morning no one was forced to start the day with an empty stomach and brought breakfast in the form of sandwiches, drinks and cakes. Afterwards, we headed in the direction of the bowling center via public transport. Once there, the good atmosphere of the morning increased through the
encouragement of all, to prove their skills on the ball. For some it was the first bowling event in their life. Each shot was celebrated frenetically.
The 2-hour tournament was completed with an award ceremony. To convert the competition principle back to a team spirit, the first-place winner and the last placed were awarded.
The first get together has been perceived positively by everyone. There was a lively exchange between the OASIS, carers and the SKOPOS staff. Despite the very different life situations the initiation of conversations took place without any problems, fear of contact was not existent, so many things were discussed openly.
It was agreed to keep contact and continue to repeat a similar event. SKOPOS also decided to organize an in-house collection of clothes for OASIS once a quarter and to support the homeless people magazine “Bank Extra” published by OASIS through a subscription.
